Ahhhh! Finally, Spring is here to stay! As you are planting your vegetable garden, don’t forget to add a few herbs to the mix! Why? Well, I’m glad you asked. Herb Gardening on Kent Island is a great idea!
Basil, cilantro, dill, oregano, and chives are just a few of the herbs you can add to your garden. These are probably the more popular ones. But as I’ve discussed with many of you, ‘Plant what you eat’. I love fresh sliced tomato alongside basil with a splash of balsamic vinegar as a dinner appetizer, so basil is in my garden right now. You might enjoy mojitos by the pool or watching the sunset on the Bay and mint might be your go to herb. Maybe you are a foodie and just love the taste of peach and basil ice cream in the summertime. These are just some of the ways to incorporate herb gardening on Kent Island.
Herbs can be helpful in the kitchen but also help us in our landscapes. Mosquito problems? Maybe you try citronella, lemongrass, lavender, or rosemary in pots around your patio or deck. The oils from these plants repel some of those insect pests.
Do you enjoy pollinators? Did you know that dill and parsley are hosts plants for the yellow swallowtail butterflies? While the caterpillars chomp away at these herbs, they grow big and beautiful. They find their way to a place to transform into swallowtails. It delights me every single year! Do you eat dill and parsley? Plant extras for the butterflies!
What’s another great thing about herbs? Many are perennials, so they come back year after year. How great is that? Just another reason why you have to add herbs to your garden.
